A few of us went to the John Ryland Library in Manchester yesterday. The most exciting part was that we got to see the oldest fragment of the New Testament in existence. There were some incredibly old books and very interesting to walk around this library.

We also saw a book about miscellaneous things and a book about a thesis that might be the first one ever that is not boring.

Well, it is that time of year again. Here are some pictures that I took the last couple of weeks. Some of the photos were taken last weekend when we got together with the family on my moms side. Plus Gabriel got a sled from Grammy and Ghedo for Christmas, thankfully there was a bit of snow on the ground so he could try it out.

Sat, 10 Dec 2011 15:09:00 -0800 It's not CHRISTMAS without a tree! http://andrewnakhla.com/it-christmas http://andrewnakhla.com/it-christmas

So last week we finally got our Christmas tree.

We only had our Honda Fit to bring the tree home. One thing that I didn't realize when picking out the tree was that it was about 9ft (3m) tall. So we ended up having to strap the tree to the top of the car.

The second pic is when we finally got some lights put up and balanced the tree so it wasn't leaning to one side.

The final picture is the tree fully decorated with lights and ornaments. And for some reason there are gifts that are starting to appear under the tree!

Today we got snow for the second time this winter! I was over at a friends house and we decided to have some fun in the snow with his ATV, just had to watch out for the trees.

I was taking a Boston harbor cruise and I ended up taking a couple hundred photos of this American flag to try and get the shot I was looking for. For those that don't know Boston is where the American Revolution started and the United States was on its way to gaining independence.

I spent this past week helping my sister and her husband move from their apartment to their new house in Minneapolis. The benefit of this was that I got to spend a lot of time bonding with my nephew, Gabriel. I didn't take a lot of pictures due to working on projects but here are a few good one that I took.

I went to the Packers football game on Sunday with my dad. It was a great day for a football game, the weather was about 70 degrees and clear skies. The game was quite exciting as there was lots of interceptions, rushing yards and most importantly touchdowns by the Packers. Aaron Rodgers even ran the ball a couple times, resulting in at least two touchdowns. The final score at the end of the fourth quarter was 49-23 for another win by Green Bay. This leave the Packers at 4-0 for the season overall. Here a a few pictures that I took while I was at the game.

I was going through some of my boxes of stuff and found this piece of history. The Apple QuickTake 100 was one of the first consumer digital cameras out in the market. It was launched in 1994 with a resolution of 640 x 480 or about .3 megapixels. At full resolution it could store about 8 images before the memory was full.

I decided to take the motorcycle for a short fall ride as the colors are changing.  The weather was a bit unpredictable as it rained at one point, but it is fun to get out and ride the motorcycle despite the weather. A friend once told me, "if you wait for the weather you will never ride."  Also believe it or not but my motorcycle is 26 years old already!!

Mon, 15 Aug 2011 14:35:54 -0700 The Money Shot http://andrewnakhla.com/the-money-shot http://andrewnakhla.com/the-money-shot

This past Friday evening we had a Organization Team Barbecue and I brought my camera along to take a few photos. I was talking with one of my friends that was there and asked him why didn't he bring his dslr with him. I told him the reason why I brought mine was because you never know when you are going to get the "money" shot.

I was hoping for some good shots but really didn't think much more of it. When I got home I almost decided to wait till the next day to view the photos but after taking a shower I was feeling a bit more awake, so I download the photos into Aperture. I am so glad that I didn't wait because I had a couple very good shots. After a editing the photos a bit to emphasize what the photo is telling I was blown away and knew I had gotten the "money" shot I was after.

Here is a link to the photo:

Mon, 15 Aug 2011 14:34:40 -0700 Using a Reversing Ring http://andrewnakhla.com/using-a-reversing-ring http://andrewnakhla.com/using-a-reversing-ring

Someone recently told me about reversing rings and how they can be used to turn your regular lenses in to a macro lens. Curious as I was, I did some research on the topic and was surprised to learn that as the name obviously states the reversing ring allows you to mount your lens backwards on the camera body.

The downside to this is that you loose auto focus, image stabilization, and aperture control. This is because the metal contacts that make the connection between the lens and body is no longer possible. Here is a shot of me using the reversing ring:

Reversering_04

I tried several different lenses that I have and I was completely blown away how great of a macro lens a regular lens can turn into. One article I read stated that a 28-105 lens is about a 1:7 macro with the reversing ring. A normal macro lens is usually 1:1. As with all macro photography and such a high magnification ratio I got the best results using a tripod. However I was able to handhold some shots if the light source was bright enough so I could use a fast shutter speed.

I think the trickiest part for me was focusing on the subject. Because the camera body was not controlling the aperture, the lens basically stayed wide open. It seemed like if I were to move a fraction of a millimeter the subject would either get completely out of focus or another part would come in to focus. I would have to use the zoom to bring the subject into view and somewhat in to focus and then use the focus ring as a fine focus.

Reversing rings are quite fun to play with and I keep mine with me in case I need a macro lens in a pinch. At some point I probably will buy a dedicated macro lens but right now the price of a reversing ring ($10) is much cheaper than a Canon L macro lens ($1100)

Reversering_024

Taken using a Canon 24-105 f4 L with a reversing ring. So cool to capture the match right before it ignites.

This shot was actually handheld but was possible because the sun was out. Thankfully the bee stayed still just long enough for me to capture this.
